What Are Rotating Proxies and How Can You Use Them?

This article will show you how rotating proxies work, what types of rotating proxies exist, their most common use cases and how to set them up.

What Is a Rotating Proxy?

A rotating proxy is a type of proxy server that changes your IP address with every request or at certain periods. Rather than having a static IP for all of your online activities, a rotating proxy will switch your IP dynamically and each request you will make will appear like it is coming from a different device or location.

How Does IP Rotation Work?

IP rotation works by cycling a pool of IP addresses to send your requests automatically, switching to a new IP after each request or at a pre-set time. This is taken care of seamlessly by the rotation of proxies, and thus it looks like many different users are sending requests.

Imagine yourself gathering price data from some web store. After each new request, it changes the IP address and because of this, the website will see these request like they are coming from multiple people instead of a single one. So, in case you deal with websites that have severe restrictions, these proxies will help you to not trigger any type of alarms, such as anti-bot mechanisms.

There are two common ways in which IP rotation can be configured:

  • Request-based rotation: A new IP is assigned after every request.
  • Time-based rotation: The IP switches at the predetermined intervals, ranging from every minute to every hour.

Also, many rotating proxy services, including us, provide a sticky session option. These sticky sessions allow you to use the same IP address for multiple requests for a specific period of time before switching to a new one. This option is usually used when you want to maintain a consistent session like logging into an account.

Which Types of Rotating Proxies Exist?

In general, rotating proxies come in different forms, each with their own set of advantages, depending on your needs and use cases. Let's look closer at these types.

Residential Rotating Proxies

Residential proxies use IP addresses assigned to real devices connected to home networks by ISPs. Such IP addresses are fully indistinguishable from those of any regular, casual user. For this reason, they are trusted by most website and very hard to be detected or banned by those websites. These proxies are the best when we talk about tasks that demand the highest level of anonymity and dependability, such as bypass of geo-restrictions, sensitive content access, deep market research, or web scraping.

Datacenter Rotating Proxies

Datacenter proxies are powered by servers hosted in large-scale professional data centers. Such proxies boast excellent speed and cost-effectiveness, which would be perfect for high-volume operations like bulk web scraping or data gathering. However, since datacenter IPs are not linked to real ISP-assigned addresses, websites that have severe restrictions can detect these proxies with ease. So, if you want to use rotating datacenter proxies for web scraping, be sure that the website you want to scrape is not full of restrictions and anti-bot mechanisms.

Rotating Mobile Proxies

Rotating mobile proxies make use of the IP addresses of mobile devices, including smartphones and tables, using cellular networks. Because such proxies are able to represent real users of mobile devices, that fact makes them nearly indistinguishable and highly anonymous. Bear in mind, though, they may be quite costly since they will need big pools of IP addresses and might also be a bit slower, as in some cases, traffic is treated as flowing via cellular data, not by Wi-Fi. But don't worry, as in most cases, rotating residential or datacenter proxies will provide the same level of privacy and performance while being much more affordable and faster.

Common Use Cases for Rotating Proxies

SEO Monitoring

For SEO tasks, rotating proxies are priceless. They allow marketers to scrape search engine data like keyword rankings and SERP results without rate limitations and bans. With location-specific IPs, these proxies provide the ability to analyze regionally targeted search results, which help lots of businesses to refine their marketing strategies and improve their search visibility.

Web Scraping

When we talk about large-scale web scraping, we must implement rotating proxies in our strategy. With them, we can dynamically switch IPs with each request and avoid being blocked by websites with severe restrictions. Now we can only focus on gathering important data, like product price, reviews, or competitor information, uninterruptedly with these type of proxies.

Market Research

Scraping the market at scale means being able to access data from thousands and thousands of sources without getting blocked. Rotating proxies make that possible by assigning each request a new IP, allowing businesses to analyze competitor pricing, monitor consumer behavior, track industry trends, and make data-driven decisions—all while staying under the radar.

Ad Verification

Rotating proxies have become indispensable in ad because they can help a business ensure that its advertisement is correctly appearing and reaching out to the targeted audience. They also let companies track their campaigns across different regions and platforms, making sure that only valid traffic is coming and verifying if fraudulent activities that waste their advertising budget exist.

How to Use Rotating Proxies

Step 1: Log into Anonymous Proxies Dashboard

Firstly, you need to log into Anonymous Proxies Dashboard and navigate to the rotating proxies section. Here, select the type of rotating proxy you want to use. I will use rotating residential proxies for this example.

Once in the rotating proxies section, you’ll need to create a configuration for your proxy.

Here, you just need to select the country you want your IPs to come from, and whether you need sticky session or not.

Step 3: Integrate Proxies Into Your Tools or Browser

Once your proxy credentials are ready, the next step is to integrate them into your preferred browser. In this example I will set them up in the Firefox browser.

So, firstly go to Firefox settings and search for proxy .

Once you are here, just input your proxy details like the IP and port, then click on "OK".
